should voters be required to have valid US ID? It seems republicans typically say yes while dems say no? What is your take an why?

Here in Texas we had a proposal to require identification to vote. The US government battled Texas over this. I am left wondering why, shouldn't we protect our process from fraud, or at least attempt too? Why is it so horrible to ask for identification? Whos rights are violated by asking...
